Homemade Baby Food -
Kai is growing up! Every time he wakes up in the morning, I swear he has gotten bigger. When I was first significant everyone told me how times flies, and "they grow up so fast." In my head I knew all that, but wow, they actually practice seem to change before my eyes. He started teething a couple months agone, sitting upward most a month ago, eating solids almost ii months ago, and finally enjoying solids nigh a week ago. Actually, for a proficient month he would eat a footling here and there but gave me that "eh" face every time, and would much prefer to raspberry the food back at me. But the past calendar week he has been all near his solid nutrient and tin't seem to get enough! Score!
I am that mom. I make my own baby food. When nosotros had Koa we were on a pretty strict budget and when I saw the price of pre-made infant food I about died. I had institute a Baby Bullet at Costco, and thought perchance I would give making my own baby food a shot. The first thing I made was my own rice cereal, and after that I was hooked. I could by a pound of brown rice at Sprouts for less than a small box of rice cereal at the grocery shop. Then I would just come dwelling house and use the grain bract form my Baby Bullet and bam! I had ascension cereal. I did the aforementioned with oatmeal and millet. And then I started making the purees and I roughshod in love. I could make whatever combination I wanted and for soooooooo much cheaper than buying baby food at the store.
I take had a few friends inquire how I brand my baby food, what I use and some combinations. Really it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Simply I know that feeling, similar yous are giving your kid the same carrots and peas everyday. And then here'south what I practise:
I make all my babe food for about 2 weeks in about an hr. I usually do it on a Saturday or Sunday to prep for the following week(s). Actually, Information technology takes less time to make information technology than it would to become in the car and drive to the store to buy it!
I need to preface past saying that I practice not follow any of the "guidelines" for what to give your baby when. I have no timeline, I don't wait to requite eggs or peanut butter. I start solids at about 4/five months and go from in that location. You do what works for you. I do however, starting time with purees, and move forrard with textures. So these recipes and ideas can be made however y'all/your infant prefers them based on gustation/texture.
*One matter: Do brand sure you lot are following whatever you and your pediatrician have discussed. This is what works for me/my kids.
These aren't actually recipes per say, simply rather ideas. Foods and combinations that my kids have enjoyed. Something to remember: babies have no idea that chicken, carrots, pea and pasta isn't a "Breakfast food" or that blueberries, apples, and pears seems like dessert. So don't feel similar you take to requite a sure kind of nutrient at a certain time of twenty-four hour period. take fun with it. And if you lot are brave(er than me) go on and sense of taste what y'all brand! Just call up that just because information technology may not taste skilful to you lot, babies don't accept a "foodie" palate and what may seem (often) gross to us, may end upwardly his/her favorite meal!
Go started:
(amounts depend on how much food you lot desire to make, go ahead and make more/less)
one head broccoli
2 cups baby carrots
2 apples (any variety)
2 pears
1 can garbanzo beans (drained and rinsed)
1 container blueberries
ane cup cooked whole what pasta (cooked very well)
1/ii cup evidently yogurt (full fat)
1 lemon (optional)
Steam the fruits and veggies. If you tin can't steam, go ahead and eddy them, just watch that they don't become too washed, or they will fall apart in the h2o.
Allow each food cool.
At present, I utilise my Baby Bullet, but yous can make your puree however works for y'all. A regular blender works, or a nutrient processor, or even a spud masher in a pinch. Blend/puree each fruit or veggie individually, to the desired consistency. The younger the baby, the smoother the puree. The older they get, start leaving it a little chunkier. Texture!
Once everything has been pureed, you can put them into private cups/containers and freeze.
or
Brand a few of these combinations!
I use craven broth to sparse some of the mixtures out sometimes. A fiddling scrap of lemon juice is swell with only about anything. And don't exist afraid to use spices. I use cinnamon alot! And Oatmeal added to any fruit is cracking to thicken it up, add a fiddling fiber, and fill them upwards!
- broccoli, carrots, apples, and pasta with a splash of chicken broth. Blend to desired consistency.
- apples, pears, sprinkle of cinnamon (alone or with oatmeal)
- blueberries, apples, cinnamon (alone or with oatmeal)
- broccoli, carrots, garbanzo beans, apples
- garbanzo beans, carrots, splash of craven broth
- apples with cinnamon (alone or with oatmeal)
- broccoli, carrots and pasta with splash of chicken broth and lemon juice (optional)
Yogurt with:
-blueberries and apples
-carrots and broccoli
-apples, pears and a sprinkle of cinnamon
These are just a few combinations I will use these next couple of weeks with the fruit and veggies I prepared above. The combinations are endless though. Change upwardly what you cook each week. I'll practice another post after using some other foods! For now savor!
For your amusement:
Speaking of eating. Koa has decided that he doesn't like carrots. Seriously, what child doesn't like carrots. At this point I wouldn't even care if he ate them slathered in ranch dressing. But, oh yeah! he doesn't similar ranch either! Weirdo! So, in an effort to become him to expand his vegetable intake beyond peas, corn and dark-green beans, I gave him carrots with his sandwich for lunch today. I even gave him some peanut butter with information technology (he LOVES peanut butter and my students used to eat that all the time and so I thought, what the hey). Well, yous would have thought I was puling out his fingernails! He cried for a solid 20 minutes all because I put 4 baby carrots on his plate. 4! So he tried negotiating…
Koa: OK, I will swallow my sandwich then my carrots. ok?
Me: OK, you demand to eat them though.
Koa: Ok. I will eat my sandwich and then I will eat just one carrot ok? Not all of them. Simply one.
Me: When did I say that? Swallow you sandwich.
Koa: And then I volition eat just i carrot and be done? (Still crying btw.)
Me: Fine, but you need to eat information technology now. If you don't swallow the carrots we are not going to the park. (He was asking all morning to get to the park.)
Koa: It'southward ok. I don't want to go to the park. I don't accept to eat the carrots now right? (My main negotiator..ugh)
Me: You however have to eat them.
Koa: OK, but but one? Just ane ok? (Crying a little harder, but opening his mouth.)
Me: But bite and chew.
Koa: (with a mouth full of carrot and crying) I don't like carrots. I don't like this. Just i! All done now? All done!
Me: Good job. Thank you for trying it.
Koa: Ok, I tried it. I don't like carrots. I don't have to eat them anymore because I don't like them ok?
Yeah, certain kid… this is not the cease of carrots, I assure you.
